Also a former South Korean international, Kim coached South Korean division one side Incheon United and the South Korea U23 men's team. Since being appointed as the first non-Chinese head coach of Chang'an Athletic on Dec 17, 2019, Kim has helped the team finish two training sessions.

Due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, all the Chinese domestic football matches of the 2020 season have been postponed. Chang'an Athletic intended to start its final training session on Jan 28, but the plan was delayed.

Chang'an resumed training on March 1 in the city of Kunming, the capital of China's southwest Yunnan Province. Although Kim had arrived in China at that time, the South Korean needed to be quarantined and couldn't perform his duty immediately.

"Kim is a genial person. He gets along with colleagues and players very well. His counterattack tactic suits our team's situation," said the club's media release.
