HONG KONG –Two former chief executives Tung Chee-hwa and Leung Chun-ying have reportedly established an alliance of political and business leaders to unite people of all walks of life with the goal of bringing the city forward.
The alliance, Hong Kong Coalition, originally planned to hold its inauguration ceremony next Monday, local Chinese-language newspaper Sing Tao Daily reported. However, the event may have to be postponed because of the extension of the social distancing rules.
The alliance’s initiators also include a member of the Committee for the Basic Law Maria Tam Wai-chu, business tycoon Lee Ka-sing and chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong Starry Lee Wai-king

A list circulated on the internet shows that the alliance has planned to assemble more than 1,000 political and business leaders for the purpose. Tam Yiu-chung, a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, has reportedly agreed to act as the coalition’s secretary-general.
The alliance’s initiators also include a member of the Committee for the Basic Law Maria Tam Wai-chu, business tycoon Lee Ka-sing and chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong Starry Lee Wai-king.

The alliance’s website shows its mission statement which read, in part, as follows: “Upholding the ‘one country, two systems’, and building a stable and prosperous Hong Kong.”
It also carries the following slogans: “Opt for development not destruction”, “Opt for the rule of law not vandalism”, “Opt for unity not discord” and “Push Hong Kong forward.”
