ISLAMABAD - The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday banned the country's famous cricket star Umar Akmal for a period of three years under an anti-corruption code, said a statement.

According to the statement, Akmal would not be able to participate in any kind of sports activity during the three-year period starting Feb. 20, 2020, when he was suspended for not informing the authorities about some match-fixing offers to him.

Akmal appeared before the PCB authorities and defended himself, but he was charged with two breaches of the anti-corruption code in two incidents.

The PCB asks all professional cricketers to stay away from the menace of corruption and immediately inform relevant authorities as soon as they are approached for their best interest

"The PCB doesn't take any pleasure in seeing a promising international cricketer being declared ineligible for three years on corruption charges, but this is once again a timely reminder to all who think they can get away by breaching the anti-corruption code," the statement added.

The PCB asks all professional cricketers to stay away from the menace of corruption and immediately inform relevant authorities as soon as they are approached for their best interest.

According to sources in the PCB, an anti-corruption team raided Akmal's hotel room in the southern port city of Karachi on Feb 20  where he was staying to play the opening match of the Pakistan Super League.

The team also confiscated Akmal's mobile phones and a laptop for forensic tests which finally proved him guilty of having a connection with match-fixers.
