Cultural editor Chitralekha Basu took the top honor in “Best Arts and Culture News Reporting” with her reports that look at how artificial intelligence can shape art in the years to come. As technologies increasingly penetrate our lives, the series examined some of the most noteworthy achievers from different creative fields in AI and explored ways in which machines are making an impact and how they adjust to changes brought about by this technology.

The first runner-up for “Best News Writing (English)” went to Dara Wang, her second award in this category. Her article, titled “Can doctor deficit cope with aging society?”, offered a succinct analysis of a complex social problem — the shortage of doctors at public hospitals. Using data from various countries and regions, the article reviewed public health policies and proposed innovative measures for public-private partnerships. It was also the first writing award for China Daily’s young Data Journalism team, which had won several awards in design.

The business desk scooped four awards. Among them was Zhou Mo — a previously award winner. Her article “Villages that help spin an industry” was first-runner up in “Best Business News Writing (English)”. The report focused on a village in Guangdong producing goods for the biggest Chinese e-commerce platform, Taobao. From the perspective of the village, it discussed the rise and fall of e-commerce and how the industry copes with today’s commercial environment.

Senior business reporter Oswald Chan won the first-runner up in “Best Science News Reporting” for his series on “The power of data” — the only English series in this category.

Luo Weiteng won the second runner-up in “Best Business News Writing (English)”. The article “Unlocking the paradox of nation’s ‘eldest son’” examined how the once industrial heartland of China, Dongbei (Northeastern China), is on route to an ‘‘urban renaissance’’ with its burgeoning web celebrity business.

The team’s “Impact investing” series by Sophie He, Oswald Chan, Luo Weiteng, Zhou Mo and Chai Hua won a merit award in “Best Business News Reporting”.

Veteran winners Roy Liu and Edmond Tang have both won merit awards for “Best Photograph (Features)” and in the “Best Photograph (Sports)”, respectively.

Zheng Wanying was second runner-up for “Best Headline” for her “Nonprofit takes the plunge to treat autism”.

The Hong Kong News Awards, held by the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong since 1997, recognizes achievements in reporting, writing, photography, and design.
