Hobart International: Wang upsets Van Uytvanck to reach quarters

SYDNEY - China's Wang Xinyu on Wednesday booked her slot in the Hobart International quarterfinals after edging out world No 70 Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 at the Domain Tennis Center.

Ranked world No. 89, the 21-year-old Chinese young gun fired three aces, won 69.4 percent of her first-serve points and saved four out of six break points through the 140-minute clash.

The decider saw Wang run a three-game winning streak after Van Uytvanck tied the set at 2-2. Holding a 5-3 advantage, Wang only conceded one point to her Belgian opponent before sealing the victory.

On Thursday, Wang will take on Lauren Davis of the United States at the center court. The 29-year-old American, currently ranked as world No 84, toppled her compatriot, world No 36 Sloane Stephens, in the opening round, and breezed to the quarterfinals with a 7-6(1), 6-3 victory over Belgium's Ysaline Bonaventure.

Earlier, top seed Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic was dispatched by Russian qualifier Anna Blinkova 7-5, 6-4 after one hour and 41 minutes.

The most grinding showdown for the day was staged between the world No 44 Bernarda Pera of the United States and Germany's world No 29 Laura Siegemund.

After three hours on court, Pera prevailed 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4 to make the quarterfinals.In women's doubles, Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland and Panna Udvardy of Hungary notched up a 7-6(4), 6-2 quarterfinal win over Alicia Barnett of Britain and Monica Niculescu of Romania. They will encounter Ulrikke Eikeri of Norway and Catherine Harrison of the United States in the semis.
