Sandstorm in Beijing expected to end by Tuesday evening

Beijing, together with many regions in northern China, experienced a sandstorm starting on Monday through Tuesday and the forecast said this round of the storm is likely to end by this evening.

It is forecast by weather authorities that another round of sandstorm will hit the city around Friday.

On Monday in Beijing, the minimum visibility was between 1 and 4 kilometers, according to the capital's meteorological service.

The level of PM10 particles reached a concentration of more than 200 micrograms per cubic meter on Monday afternoon, according to the Beijing Ecological and Environmental Monitoring Center.

The level of PM10 soared to more than 1,000 mcg per cu m on Monday evening and peaked at 1,384 mcg per cu m at 10:00 pm, which meant severe air pollution.

On days when air quality is good, the PM10 level usually remains below 150 mcg per cu m.

Forecasters issued a blue weather alert warning for sandstorms. China has a four-tier, color-coded weather-warning system, with red representing the most severe warning and blue representing the least.

The city government has also advised the public to take precautions against the heavy winds and sandstorms, and suggested that drivers prepare for poor visibility.

In response to the dusty weather, Beijing Forestry and Parks Bureau announced on Monday night that all outdoor gathering, activities and sports events should by suspended.
