On Aug 9, 2023, Pakistani President Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly, or the lower house of the parliament, for fresh elections on the advice of then Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The dissolution also ended the term of the country's central government led by Sharif three days ahead of the completion of its five-year term.

According to the Pakistani constitution, the general elections should be held within 90 days after the dissolution of the assembly in such cases.
