Chinese shares close lower Wednesday

BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.89 percent to 3,213.62 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.77 percent lower at 10,225.87 points.

The combined turnover covered by these two indices stood at about 1.14 trillion yuan (about $159 billion), down from 1.21 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Stocks related to precious metals and communication equipment led the gains, while the real estate, kitchenware, electrical appliances and tourism sectors suffered significant declines.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.54 percent to close at 2,101.03 points.
