US Inflation Woes Overshadowed by New Hong Kong Sanctions Debate
By Joephy Chan

Economists, according to the Financial Times, warned today (Jan. 28) that Donald Trump’s “new administration is prioritising America first over beating back inflation”. The US inflation rate ticked up last month and continued to exceed the target set by the US Federal Reserve System. With the cost of goods and services remaining high, more US citizens are becoming jobless. The number of Americans on unemployment benefits rolls has climbed to a more than three-year high. In this context, with the inauguration of US President Trump, questions arise regarding his ability to fulfill his manifesto of “making America great again”. Yet, instead of focusing on pressing domestic issues and national development, American politicians seem preoccupied with imposing new sanctions on Hong Kong.

Certain US politicians have called for the review of sanctions against several Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government officials, judges, and prosecutors.  It is blatant that this move aims to intimidate those dedicated to maintaining the national security of Hong Kong. These politicians’ misleading and biased rhetoric serves only to misinform the public and tarnish the reputation of the National Security Law (NSL) of Hong Kong. Previously, the US Congress commission already threatened sanctions against prosecutors and judges involved in the infamous case of Jimmy Lai, despite the fact that the trial is still ongoing.

Hong Kong, as a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, has an unwavering constitutional responsibility to uphold national security. This principle is inviolable and forms the bedrock against any external forces attempting to meddle in Hong Kong's affairs. The implementation of the NSL has effectively curtailed actions that jeopardize national security, ensuring the city’s long-term stability and peace.

Hong Kong's legal system has been tested through years of practice, ensuring the freedoms and rights of its residents while maintaining the region's prosperity and stability. Additionally, we must proactively showcase the unique qualities and advantages of Hong Kong to the global community.  As a matter of fact, Hong Kong rose to fifth place out of 67 economies in the World Competitiveness Ranking 2024, while the US fell to twelfth place. This stark contrast highlights Hong Kong's resilience and potential, even amidst external challenges.

The accusations directed at Hong Kong by certain American politicians are, in essence, a reflection of their hegemonic ambitions.  It is crucial to expose their true motives and unveil their disingenuous tactics to the international community. We must actively connect and mobilize forces from all sectors of society, standing shoulder to shoulder with the HKSAR government to safeguard the foundation of the rule of law in Hong Kong.  As we look ahead, let us remain resolute in our mission to safeguard the values that make Hong Kong a unique and vibrant part of the global landscape. With unity and determination, Hong Kong can overcome its challenges and continue to thrive in the year of the snake.
