Hongkong Post announced on Monday evening that it will resume accepting parcels to the United States starting Tuesday, following confirmation from US authorities that no tariffs will be applied to such shipments.

On Feb 4, US postal authorities informed Hongkong Post that any mail containing goods would not be accepted from Feb 5 unless a "Formal Entry" — a detailed declaration of package contents — was submitted under US regulations, after US President Donald Trump decided to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on Chinese imports, including those from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, on the same day.

In response, Hongkong Post temporarily suspended such deliveries while engaging in discussions with US officials.

The situation was reversed within 24 hours as the US Postal Service (USPS) said on Feb 5 that it would continue to accept packages from Hong Kong. The USPS did not explain the U-turn in policy. Meanwhile, Hongkong Post maintained the suspension of accepting US-bound parcels until Monday.

In a statement issued on Monday night, Hongkong Post said it had received official confirmation that US authorities will not impose tariffs on these shipments, prompting the service’s reinstatement on Tuesday.

However, the agency cautioned residents that US government policies could be subject to sudden changes, which might result in further alterations to mail acceptance policies. Additionally, delays may occur due to potential backlogs of mail destined for the US, said Hongkong Post. Residents with inquiries can contact the postal service hotline at 2921 2222.

In the same statement, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government reiterated its dissatisfaction with US tariffs on Hong Kong products and called for immediate corrective action. On Friday, the SAR government announced that it will file a complaint regarding the matter with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
