The Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2: Demon Child Conquers the Sea will begin its full theatrical run in Hong Kong and Macao starting Saturday, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

The film will be given its official premiere in Hong Kong on Tuesday, followed by a Macao premiere the next day, the report said. Hong Kong’s premiere ceremony will be held at the Jade & Pearl Plaza in Causeway Bay.

The premiere events were coordinated by the central government’s liaison offices for Hong Kong and Macao, along with the respective governments of the two special administrative regions, under the guidance of China’s National Film Administration.

Ne Zha 2’s 10 billion yuan ($1.37 billion) in ticket sales have made it the highest-grossing film in China and the first non-Hollywood film to break into the global all-time box office top 20. It will be jointly distributed in the two special administrative regions by Mandarin Motion Pictures, Intercontinental Film Distributors, Sil-Metropole Organization, and Emperor Motion Pictures, as announced last week by Mandarin Motion Pictures and Enlight Media, one of the film’s producers.

A sequel to the 2019 hit Ne Zha: Birth of the Demon Child, Ne Zha 2 has been celebrated as a milestone for Chinese animation. It reimagines the story of Ne Zha, a rebellious deity from Chinese mythology, by blending ancient folklore with contemporary themes of defiance and self-determination.

Since its Chinese New Year debut on Jan 29, Ne Zha 2 has dominated Chinese mainland cinemas, surpassing its predecessor’s 5 billion yuan haul and outpacing Hollywood competitors. The film was released in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the United States, and Canada last week.
