Syria forms constitutional drafting committee to address legal void

DAMASCUS - Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced Sunday the formation of a seven-member committee tasked with drafting a constitutional declaration, local media Syria TV reported.

The committee includes constitutional law specialist Abdulhamid Al-Awak, Deir Al-Zour-born international law professor Yasser Al-Huwaish, civil law expert Ismail Al-Khalfan, head of the Public Law Department at Damascus University Rayaan Kaheelan, political scientist and administrator Mohammad Reda Jalakhi, legal researcher Ahmad Korbi, and journalist and human rights advocate Bahia Mardini, it reported.

The members were selected based on their academic and professional credentials, as well as their previous roles in legal and constitutional discussions, it reported, adding that the committee aims to bridge the constitutional gap following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's rule in December 2024.
