As one of Asia’s most popular sporting events, the Hong Kong Sevens began in 1976 with 12 teams playing in front of a crowd of 3,000.
By 2025, the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, recognized as one of the region's iconic rugby tournaments, was attracting up to 50,000 visitors a day, according to the event organizer.

The 3-day event, which ended Sunday, also marked a significant milestone as it made its debut at the newly-opened Kai Tak Sports Park. The Major Sports Events Committee has awarded the "M" Mark to the Hong Kong Sevens for its contribution in enhancing Hong Kong's status as a major sporting hub.
