As one of Asia’s most popular sporting events, the Hong Kong Sevens began in 1976 with 12 teams playing in front of a crowd of 3,000.

By 2025, the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, recognized as one of the region's iconic rugby tournaments, was attracting up to 50,000 visitors a day, according to the event organizer.
