Square Word Calligraphy, developed by internationally recognized contemporary artist Xu Bing starting in 1993, is an innovative method of writing English by combining strokes in a structure similar to Chinese characters. Following Xu's appointment as Hong Kong's Ambassador for Cultural Promotion in 2024, "Xu Bing in Hong Kong: Square Word Calligraphy" marks the artist's inaugural commissioned art initiative in the city.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) also collaborated with the MTR Corporation Ltd to display Xu's newest calligraphy works at four MTR stations: Sheung Wan, Admiralty, Exhibition Centre, and Wan Chai.

This writing system highlights the interplay between Eastern and Western cultures, aligning with Hong Kong's vibrant cultural tapestry.

As a part of the program, a classroom at HKMoA provides writing tools and sketchbooks to encourage audiences to apply their techniques to this special writing system.

The exhibition will run from March 26 to July 30 at HKMoA and will move to the Oil Street Art Space in North Point from Sept 29 to Jan 11 of the following year. Admission is free.
