HONG KONG – Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Thursday urged overseas Chinese living in Hong Kong to stand united against US protectionism and do everything possible to promote free trade on the global stage, emphasizing Hong Kong’s role in fostering global economic cooperation.

Speaking at the “Gathering the Strength of the Overseas Chinese Community for High-Quality Development” conference, he condemned the US’ recent tariff hikes as a violation of multilateral trade rules, calling the move “economic bullying” that undermines global free trade.

"These unilateral actions not only defy economic principles but also trample on the multilateral trading system," the CE said.

He reaffirmed China’s commitment to the World Trade Organization and rules-based global trade, stressing that the nation remains a stabilizing force in the world economy.

Highlighting Hong Kong’s unique role as an international hub, Lee encouraged the overseas Chinese community to leverage their global networks to counter protectionism and expand trade ties, particularly with emerging markets in Southeast Asia and the Middle East under the Belt and Road Initiative.

He said that overseas Chinese should advocate for free trade and expose the “fallacies of protectionism” in international discourse. Overseas Chinese should also utilize their business connections and help diversify markets and strengthen regional economic cooperation, Lee added.

By fostering cultural exchanges, they can enhance global understanding of China’s development, the chief executive said.

Lee reiterated Hong Kong’s commitment to aligning with national strategies, including the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development and high-level international cooperation.
