E-carmaker BYD will leverage technological innovation and keep its core components within its own hands to address the challenges posed by protectionism and the tariff barriers, company executives revealed during a media tour of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) on Thursday.

Speaking to the media, Director of BYD Branding Wang Aihui said that, with exports surging 72 percent year-on-year to over 400,000 units in 2024 across 110 markets, BYD is prioritizing in-house control of critical components to ensure product quality and the firm’s ability to adapt to diverse regulatory landscapes.

He highlighted the firm’s vertically integrated strategy, and said that mastering core technologies mitigates supply-chain vulnerabilities amid geopolitical uncertainties.

Headquartered in Shenzhen’s Pingshan district, BYD benefits from the Greater Bay Area’s robust new energy vehicles (NEVs) ecosystem, which accelerates research and development and industrial scaling, said Wang.

The recent delivery of its fourth NEV carrier vessel, the BYD Shenzhen, with a 9,200-vehicle capacity, underscores BYD’s global logistics push.

Founded in 1994 and dual-listed in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Shenzhen, BYD — short for "Build Your Dream" — operates over 30 industrial parks worldwide, spanning the automotive, electronics, renewable energy, and rail transit sectors.
