HK govt 'has no plans' to shelve extension of HK$2 fare scheme

HONG KONG – Secretary for Labour and Welfare Law Chi-kwong said the government aimed to implement the extension of the HK$2 transport fare concession scheme to those aged 60 and 64 in the next financial year (2021-2022).

Meeting the press Saturday morning, Law said there is currently no timetable for the implementation of the scheme but the government has no plan to shelve it.

As the government, we will definitely look at their (ExCo members) views, analyze and examine the different options.

“We are still working at full stream in examining the report from our consultant looking at the HK$2 transport fare concession scheme,” he said.

He said the government has collected views from members of the Executive Council recently and will explore different options.

“Basically, what we have done is we have briefed the members of the Executive Council recently and then some of the members expressed their views. As the government, we will definitely look at their views, analyze and examine the different options.”

Currently, elderly people aged 65 or above and eligible people with disabilities can travel on designated public transport at a concessionary fare of HK$2 per trip.

An estimated 590,000 people aged 60 to 64 can enjoy the HK$2 fare concession after the extension, which will involve an additional recurrent expenditure of around HK$1.7 billion
