Xu/Yang bow out of US Open women's doubles

NEW YORK - Chinese pair Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan lost to No 12 seeds American Caroline Dolehide and Storm Sanders of Australia 6-2, 6-3 in the women's doubles third round at the US Open in New York on Monday.

Xu and Yang, seeded seventh, had seen off the Swedish-Russian pair of Rebecca Peterson and Anastasia Potapova in the second round, but failed to go further this time.

In another women's doubles match on Monday, China's Zhang Shuai and Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine were also stopped in the third round, defeated by sixth seeds Desirae Krawczyk of the US and the Netherlands' Demi Schuurs 6-4, 6-4.

Zhang, 33, has two Grand Slam doubles titles and is the defending US Open women's doubles champion.

Later, Zhang will team up with Croatia's Mate Pavic and meet Japan's Ena Shibahara and Franko Skugor of Croatia in the mixed doubles quarterfinals.
