4 dead, 49 missing in China mine collapse; rescue resumes

HOHHOT - Search and rescue efforts at a collapsed coal mine in Alshaa League, north China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, resumed on Thursday afternoon, after being halted by a massive landslide at the rescue site at around 6 pm on Wednesday.

An open-pit coal mine collapsed in Alxa Left Banner at around 1 pm on Wednesday, leaving more than 50 workers trapped inside.

Rescuers have so far brought out 10 people from debris, including four dead and six injured who were immediately sent to hospital, according to the rescue headquarters. Forty-nine others were still missing.

As of 6 am Thursday, more than 900 people had rushed to the site for rescue operations.

Li Zhongzeng, head of Alshaa League, said their operation was facilitated by more than 130 sets of large machinery.

Wang Xiangxi, minister of emergency management, and Sun Shaocheng, Party chief of Inner Mongolia, had both arrived at the coal mine to guide the rescue operation.
