DUBAI - Feng Yanzhe/Huang Dongping of China suffered a surprise loss in the mixed doubles on the first day of the 2023 Badminton Asia Championships here on Tuesday.
The sixth-seeded Chinese pair lost 21-18, 21-14 to Dejan Ferdinansyah/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia in the first round, with another high-ranked mixed pair, No. 3 seed Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand, also crashing out of the tournament.

The other two Chinese pairs advanced to the mixed doubles second round. Jiang Zhenbang/Wei Yaxin stunned fifth seed Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing of Malaysia 21-17, 21-13, while Cheng Xing/Chen Fanghui came from one set down to eliminate Lee Chun-hei/Ng Tsz-yau of Hong Kong, China 18-21, 21-19, 21-19.
