Hong Kong takes gold at Hangzhou Asian Games

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region clinched their first gold medal at the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games on Sunday morning, as rowers Lam San-tung and Wong Wai-chun won the men's coxless pair final. 

Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung congratulated Lam and Wong on winning the gold medal after crossing the finish line in a time of six minutes, 44 seconds and 20 milliseconds. 

Another notable event for the Hong Kong team on Sunday is the Men’s individual foil, featuring Edgar Cheung Ka-long, who had won a historic gold medal for the SAR at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021

"Lam and Wong brought their talent into full play and strived for the best. It is encouraging to see them winning the first gold for the Hong Kong, China team in the Hangzhou Asian Games this year and bringing glory to Hong Kong,” Yeung said.

“Having witnessed their triumph in person, I could feel athletes’ concentration during competition and their joy after winning. With the Hong Kong, China delegation getting off to a flying start, I wish Hong Kong athletes continue to shine in the Hangzhou Asian Games," he added.

Yeung also congratulated wushu athlete Chen Suijin, who won a bronze medal in Women's Taijiquan and Taijijian All-Round.

The SAR has sent its largest ever delegation, including about 660 athletes, to the Hangzhou Games from Sept 23 to Oct 8.

Swimming star Siobhan Haughey will compete in the women’s 50-meter breaststroke, while Mok Uen-ying, one of Hong Kong’s flag bearers at the games, will strive for gold in the women’s Taijiquan.
