BEIJING - Daniil Medvedev of Russia overcame a fightback from Australia's Alex de Minaur 7-6 (3), 6-3 to reach the China Open quarterfinals here on Saturday.
Medvedev broke twice to lead 5-2 in the first set, but De Minaur rallied back to tie 5-5. Both players then held their serves, dragging the opening set into a tie-break, where Medvedev rediscovered his rhythm to win 7-3.
In the second set, Medvedev claimed a commanding victory to seize the win in straight sets.

Medvedev's compatriot Andrey Rublev, seeded fifth, lost to Ugo Humbert 7-5, 3-6, 6-7 (3), as the Frenchman dominated the game with 11 aces in total.
