BERLIN -- The past days might have been an unexpected challenge for Manuel Neuer.
While the 37-year-old is on his way back to action after a 10-month injury break due to a broken leg, an unpleasant call disturbed his daily routines.
German national coach Julian Nagelsmann called to inform him about the loss of his captain status as Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is going to wear the band at least until the 2024 UEFA Euro.
Neuer announced to continue his career for some years "as I am feeling perfect" after his return and is said to take up competition in the national team
While Nagelsmann reported a "professional reaction" of Neuer, the Bayern keeper received good news from the club's medical staff and goalkeeper coach Michael Rechner.
Both parties gave their approval for a return to competitive action this weekend in the league encounter against FSV Mainz 05.

Inside reports speak of Neuer and Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel deciding on short notice if the five-time World's Best Goalkeeper winner is returning for this weekend's away game, or waiting until the UEFA Champions League encounter against Turkish side Galatasaray next Tuesday or the league clash at home on October 28.
Neuer went through intense training sessions over the past two weeks, and his return is attracting attention.
Neuer made his last appearance in the national team shirt on December 1 last year when Germany suffered a disappointing group exit at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

While Neuer's future in his club seems undisputed as Bayern is said to extend his contract for at least another year, the national team issue remains.
Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen claims to stay as the German number one after receiving the best marks in Spain and the national team.
The relationship between the coach and the keeper is said to be burdened after Bayern fired Neuer's close confidant and goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalovic in January 2023.

Neuer spoke of his heart "being ripped out" and said Tapalovic dismissal has been his most blatant career experience.
After Nagelsmann departed from Bayern, Tapalovic returned as a personal coach of Neuer, helping to secure a smooth recovery.
Neuer announced to continue his career for some years "as I am feeling perfect" after his return and is said to take up competition in the national team.
The question remains if Neuer would be willing to accept to be the number two behind Ter Stegen.
