Though Hong Kong’s Art Month ended in March, no one can complain that the city suffers from a dearth of color. Hollywood Road in particular is a permanent feast for the eyes. Serving as a vital connector between Central and Sheung Wan, the street also doubles as a never-ending exhibition.

It’s not for nothing that this 1-kilometer stretch, built over 180 years ago, was recently awarded the “world’s second-coolest street” status by Time Out magazine’s flagship London edition. It’s a delectable mix of tradition and trendiness. From a Taoist temple where the gods of literature and martial arts are worshipped, to snazzy bars adorned with outer walls on which artists are invited to paint, Hollywood Road covers quite a range.

It also stokes the spirit of adventure in a visitor. For many, climbing up the narrow stone or concrete slabs of the ladder streets branching off from Hollywood Road has led to rewarding discoveries, in the shape of an artsy boutique or a gelato parlor serving authentic Italian flavors.

One of the street’s greatest assets is its inclusive vibe. Here, hole-in-the-wall cafes rub shoulders with upscale hotels. Decommissioned centers of police activity such as Tai Kwun and the PMQ get a new lease on life as mixed-use cultural facilities offering free access to the public. Hollywood Road is a place for you to literally sip your drink sitting on the front steps of a bar and feel right at home.
