HONG KONG – The typhoon signal No. 1 was hoisted over Hong Kong on Saturday night and was forecast to remain in force until noontime Monday with Tropical Storm Prapiroon making landfall over Hainan Island, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

The observatory raised the Standby Signal No. 1 at 10:40 pm Saturday as Prapiroon came within 800 kilometers of the city and brought stormy weather to the Pearl River Estuary.

"Prapiroon will make landfall over Hainan Island in the next few hours, skirting more than 500 kilometres to the southwest of Hong Kong tomorrow morning," the observatory said in a weather bulletin at 10:45 pm on Sunday.

"Unless Prapiroon intensifies significantly, the chance of issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals will be rather low. The Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in force at least until tomorrow noon,” it added.

As of 1 am Monday, the tropical storm was estimated to be about 580 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong and was forecast to move northwest at about 14 kilometers per hour towards Hainan Island.

The observatory said Prapiroon was expected to move across Hainan Island and enter Beibu Wan before moving towards the vicinity of Guangxi to the northern part of Vietnam and weaken gradually.

It will be mainly cloudy with occasional squally showers and thunderstorms in Hong Kong on Monday. There will be swells, the observatory added.
