Origins of Chinese civilization
By Wang Zhan
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Hong Kong Palace Museum is set to unveil a new special exhibition titled The Origins of Chinese Civilization. The exhibition will open on September 25, 2024, and run through February 7, 2025.
Featuring approximately 110 exhibits from 14 major cultural institutions across the country, the exhibition includes 16 pieces that are classified as grade-one national treasures. Nearly all of these artifacts will be displayed in Hong Kong for the first time.
The exhibition delves into the complexity of cultural traits that define Chinese civilization from the Neolithic stage. It is not only worth studying in its own right but also serves as a profound example of the indigenous development of civilizations in general.
The event highlights the achievements of a national-level research - "Origins of Chinese Civilization Project" - launched by China in 2002. This project entailed extensive archaeological excavations and in-depth investigations into the origins, formation, and development of Chinese civilization.
A key feature introduced by the event organizers is a multimedia installation that reconstructs the Shimao archaeological site, known as one of the largest prehistoric stone cities in China. This installation provides the audience with an opportunity for an immersive archaeological experience.
The exhibition is jointly organized by the HKPM and Art Exhibitions China, and sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong), the museum’s strategic partner.
