China’s tech hub, Shenzhen, has gone a step further in its development of the low-altitude economy with a novel innovation from a local tech enterprise that has set a Guinness World Record as the world’s largest “flying display”.
Filmbase, located in Shenzhen’s Longgang district, broke the world record earlier this week by flying its 72.66-square-meter LED mesh screen.
The LED display, weighing 250 grams per sq m, is able to remain airborne during gentle breezes with the assistance of a drone.
According to the company, the screen can remain airborne for 20-30 minutes following two to three hours of charging. The display’s definition is dozens of times sharper than that of conventional building and drone light shows, it claimed.
Compared with conventional displays, the innovative screen consumes less energy and produces less noise pollution, the company added — though without disclosing any detailed information.

“The flying screen integrates high-definition display technology and flight equipment, which can create more striking and flexible visual effects in the air,” said Yuan Lanlan, general manager of Filmbase.
“It can provide a new type of display for such applications as aerial advertisements, brand displays, activity promotions, cultural light shows, and so on.”
The breakthrough reflects the rapid development of the low-altitude economy in Shenzhen. Output from the city’s low-altitude economy generated 90 billion yuan ($12.4 billion) in 2023, and is growing by 20 percent year-on-year.
Shenzhen’s legislation for industries related to the low-altitude economy went into effect in February 2024, and was the first of its kind in the country.

Yuan said the company is intensifying its efforts to expand its footprint in international markets by taking part in industry exhibitions. It has secured a number of overseas orders for its “flying screen” and plans to market its products to the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, Singapore and Dubai.
