Man killed in shooting at beach north of Sydney

SYDNEY - A man was shot dead during a late-night fight on Wednesday at a beach north of Sydney in Australia's state of New South Wales (NSW), police said on Thursday.

In a statement, NSW Police said that emergency services were called to the car park at Bar Beach in the city of Newcastle, over 100 km north of Sydney, at 11:40 pm local time on Wednesday and found a man with a gunshot wound.

He was treated by ambulance paramedics but died at the scene. NSW Police said that the male has not yet been formally identified but was believed to be aged 18.

According to the police, a group of people were fighting in the car park when a white vehicle drove up and a man armed with a firearm got out, fired the gun and fled the scene in the vehicle.

A crime scene has been established at the car park, and detectives from Newcastle have commenced an investigation with assistance from the state homicide squad.
