NEW DELHI - Nine people were killed and 10 others wounded in fresh violence in India's northeastern state of Manipur, local media reported on Wednesday, quoting police officials.
The killings took place during a firing incident late Tuesday night in the Khamenlok area in Kangpokpi district, about 25 km northeast of Imphal, the capital city of Manipur.
Authorities imposed a curfew and deployed over 100 columns of the army and paramilitary forces in the state to restore peace, as schools, houses, churches, vehicles and public properties were set ablaze by protesters in the state
"There was firing in the village ... and nine people were killed and 10 others injured. All injured have been admitted to hospital where the condition of one is stated to be critical," a local newspaper Hindustan Times quoted K Shivakanta Singh, a senior police official in Imphal East, as saying.
Following the incident, local authorities rushed government forces to counter the insurgents in the area. Meanwhile, the curfew relaxations have been restricted after the fresh round of violence in Manipur.

Reports said over 100 people have died and another 40,000 displaced since the outbreak of the violence over a month ago.
Last month, large-scale violence broke out in the state during a tribal protest demonstration over the inclusion of the non-tribal Meiteis community for a scheduled tribe status.

Scheduled tribes in India are officially designated as disadvantaged socio-economic groups. They are given reservations in education and jobs with the aim to improve their lives.
