Sixty-five athletes and eight coaches from the national team who achieved brilliant results at the 2024 Paris Olympics will visit Hong Kong from Aug 29 to 31, including champions in strength events like diving, swimming and table tennis, the city’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau revealed on Friday.

According to the name list, the athletes and coaches who will visit the city are from 16 sports disciplines, with many well-known “star athletes” on the list, including Pan Zhanle, champion of the men’s 100-meter freestyle and 4x100m medley relay, who is also the world record holder in the 100m freestyle event; Quan Hongchan, two-time gold medalist in diving events at the Paris Olympics; and Zhang Yufei, a swimmer specializing in the butterfly stroke and a six-time medalist in Paris.

Six gold medalists from the table tennis team will also visit, including men’s singles champion Fan Zhendong; women’s singles champion Chen Meng; and Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha, who clinched the gold medal in the mixed doubles. Team champion Ma Long, who has won six Olympic gold medals, and Wang Manyu, are also on the list.

The coaches that will visit the SAR include Zhou Jihong, head of the Swimming Administrative Center of the National Sports Bureau. She is also the nation’s first Olympic diving champion.

Gao Zhidan, director of the General Administration of Sport of China (GASC), and Zhou Jinqiang, deputy director of GASC, will lead the delegation.

The high-profile delegation is scheduled to attend a welcome reception and banquet hosted by the SAR government and to engage in exchanges with Hong Kong athletes.

They will also take part in three public events, including an Olympians gala show at Queen Elizabeth Stadium, and sports demonstrations in badminton, gymnastics, table tennis, diving and swimming at the stadium and at Victoria Park Swimming Pool.

At the Paris Olympics, the national team won 91 medals — 40 golds, 27 silvers and 24 bronzes — its best results in an overseas Olympics since the national team’s Olympic debut in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

In diving and table tennis, mainland athletes won all the gold medals on offer — eight in diving and five in table tennis.

Mainland Olympians who competed in those sports events will give demonstrations in Hong Kong on Aug 31.

Since Hong Kong’s return to the motherland in 1997, athletes from the national team have visited Hong Kong following each Olympic Games to have been held; so far, they have visited the city five times.
