NEW DELHI - India's federal ministry of sports Tuesday revoked the suspension imposed on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) after over 14 months, state-run broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) said.

The move will pave the way for the conduct of domestic tournaments and the selection of national players for international tournaments.

"The sports ministry has lifted the suspension on the WFI, ending months of uncertainty surrounding the sport," the broadcaster said. "The decision will pave the way for the resumption of activities, including selection trials for the upcoming Asian Championship in Amman, Jordan."

According to the broadcaster, the ministry has also set guidelines for the WFI to follow.

"It must ensure that selections for all international events are conducted fairly, transparently, and in compliance with the sports code, United World Wrestling regulations, and other official directives," AIR said. "Additionally, the ministry instructed the federation to maintain a balance of power among its elected office-bearers and to distance itself from suspended or terminated officials."

The ministry on December 24, 2023 had suspended the then newly elected WFI led by Sanjay Singh for multiple violations, including the hasty announcement of the Under-15 (U-15) and Under-20 (U-20) national championships.

Sanjay Singh was elected the new chief of the WFI on December 21, 2023, but the sports ministry then felt that the elected body appeared to be in complete control of former office bearers in complete disregard to the sports code.

Singh is considered a loyalist of former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh who had to step aside following allegations of sexual harassment from female wrestlers, a charge he outrightly denies.

In January 2023, a group of Olympians and international wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and others, organized a sit-in demanding the disbanding of WFI because of alleged sexual harassment of female wrestlers at the hands of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was also a lawmaker from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

However, it was called off after the government promised to investigate their complaints. Feeling neglected, the wrestlers resumed the protest in April 2023. The issue hogged headlines globally after the police detained the wrestlers when they tried to march to India's parliament.

The International wrestling body United World Wrestling condemned their detention and called for an impartial inquiry into their complaints.
