HK bridge team wins city eighth gold; breaking makes debut

Chief secretary to attend Hangzhou Games’ closing ceremony on Sunday

Hong Kong bridge players won a gold medal at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou on Friday, raising the city's total medal tally to 53 - eight gold, 16 silver and 29 bronze - and placing the team ninth in the overall medal count and 12th in the gold medal count.

The men's team beat India 42-32, 38-17 and 17-12 in the last three sessions to clinch the gold medal. The eighth gold medal in Hangzhou equals the city's record gold-medal haul in Guangzhou Games, in 2010.

The Hong Kong men's team was represented by Lai Wai-kit, Ho Hoi-tung, Ho Wai-lam, Chiu Wai-lap, Sze Shun-sum, and Mak Kwok-fai. The final spanned two days, with three sessions held each day.

After five sessions, Hong Kong had established a commanding lead of more than 70 points over India, a dominance that was extended in the last round. The national team and the Japanese team won the bronze medals.

Earlier, the Hong Kong women's bridge team seized a bronze medal.

Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki will leave Hong Kong on Saturday to attend the closing ceremony of the 19th Asian Games

In the finals of the men's boulder and lead in sport climbing on Friday, Chan Cheung-chi ranked sixth of the eight finalists. The gold, silver and bronze medals were won by Japan's Anraku Sorato, the Republic of Korea's Lee Doh-yun and the Chinese national team's Pan Yufei.

On Friday, breaking made its debut at Asiad. Although the three Hong Kong competitors didn't make it to the quarterfinals, they still made an impression.

The breakdancers, known as B-boys and B-girls, were Sze Ka-yam in the men's group, and Chan Ka-yi and Wong Chiu-wai in the women's group. Each of them faced three competitions, or "battles", in the round-robin tournament. The fourth Hong Kong representative, B-boy Tsang Isz-wa, failed to advance beyond the pre-selection round.

The breakdancers can compete in the Breaking for Gold World Series - Hong Kong 2023 competition in December, in their quest to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The closing ceremony of 19th Asian Games takes place on Sunday in Hangzhou. Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki will leave Hong Kong on Saturday to attend the closing ceremony.
