Quick counts show Prabowo winning Indonesia's presidency

JAKARTA - Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto has won Indonesia's presidential election as is shown in various quick counts that came out on Wednesday night.

The quick counts were conducted by at least six leading pollsters live-streamed on the country's local news portals about one hour after the voting ended at 1:00 pm local time.

The results all show Subianto has secured about 58 percent of votes from the 90 percent of votes counted, while his two rivals, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, obtained around 25 percent and 16.5 percent of votes respectively

The official results by Indonesia's National Election Commission (KPU) will be released in mid-March.

The voting started at 7 am local time in the morning. The counting process started simultaneously as the ballots were closed.

According to KPU, there are over 204 million registered voters for the general elections, about 53 percent of whom are under the age of 40.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo cast his vote at the Gambir polling station in Jakarta in the morning along with his wife, Iriana Joko Widodo.

The two showed their purple fingers to the press, indicating that they had completed their voting.

"This is a democratic party that we hope will become the people's party. We also hope that the elections will be conducted fairly and honestly and that all Indonesians would be happy to attend," said the president after voting.

Presidential candidate Anies voted at the Lebak Bulus polling station in South Jakarta with his family, while Prabowo cast his vote in Hambalang, West Java. Meanwhile, candidate Ganjar exercised his voting right at a polling station in Semarang, Central Java, with his wife and son.

After voting, all three presidential candidates showed their purple fingers while smiling.

Indonesia's presidential and legislative elections occur simultaneously in the general elections. The candidates elected will make up a new administration that will govern Indonesia for the next five years.

The KPU said candidates from 2,710 electoral districts will compete for a total of 20,462 seats at the country's different legislative levels, including 580 seats in the People's Representative Council.
