Business reporter Liu Yifan claimed the top spot in the Best Business News Writing (English) category, with his story titled Virtually Painful, which exposes the risks associated with cryptocurrency investments.
China Daily Hong Kong Edition on Friday pocketed 11 prizes — including two champions and three first-runners-up — at the Hong Kong News Awards, marking a new milestone in the newspaper’s decade-long winning streak.
The fruitful gain brings the newspaper’s total tally of awards to 124, with eight in 2023, 10 in 2022, and 11 in 2021. Business reporter Liu Yifan claimed the top spot in the Best Business News Writing (English) category, with his story titled Virtu ally Painful, which exposes the risks associated with cryptocurrency investments.

“This accomplishment is not something that I did alone, and there are many others who deserve to share in this award,” Liu said. He also expressed a willingness to continue pushing the boundaries of business journalism and drive positive change in the financial industry.
The page-design team of Mok Kwok-cheong and Billy Wong Siu-kay won in the Best News Page Design (Single Page) category.
The other first place was claimed by the veteran page-design team of Mok Kwok-cheong and Billy Wong Siu-kay, who won in the Best News Page Design (Single Page) category.

They also achieved second runner-up in the Best News Page Design (Series) category. Li Bingcun from the News Department secured second and third places in the Best News Writing (English) category for her in-depth articles, titled Securing a New Lease of Life and Life at a Crossroads.
The two pieces shed light on the challenges and breakthroughs in cross-border organ transplantation, and the issue of fertility perseveration for cancer patients respectively.

Zhang Tianyuan bagged the first and second runner-up prizes in the Best Business News Reporting category with her series of reports, titled Agents of Change, and Boosting HK Tourism.
The latter was co-written with colleague Jessica Chen. Xi Tianqi, a young reporter with a brief 1 1/2-year tenure at China Daily Hong Kong, earned second runner-up in the Best Young Reporter category. Xi said she sees the award as encouragement for aspiring journalists just entering the industry. “It reinforces my belief that the power of writing extends far beyond the words themselves,” she said.

The photography team also achieved new heights, with photographer Andy Chong Chun-pong’s photo titled Piggyback Paddling coming first runner-up in Best Photograph (Sports), and Edmond Tang Wing-on’s Making Waves winning first merit in the Best Photograph (News) category.
Copy editor James Cook won second runner-up in the Best Headline category with his innovative title In the Green Fast Lane, for a story highlighting Hong Kong’s efforts to accelerate the adoption of public and private electric vehicles.

This year, the Hong Kong News Awards presented 78 prizes across categories that included reporting, writing, photography, design, and news video.
