Iran's president-elect, Saudi crown prince laud ties progress

TEHRAN - Iran's President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud have hailed the progress of bilateral relations.

In a phone call on Wednesday, the Saudi crown prince congratulated Pezeshkian on his victory in Iran's 14th presidential election, the Iranian Students' News Agency reported.

Pezeshkian expressed gratitude towards the Saudi crown prince for his felicitation.

The two sides also highlighted the necessity to expand cooperation between their countries in different areas, the report said.

Pezeshkian was announced as Iran's next president on July 6 following his victory in a runoff against Saeed Jalili, a former chief nuclear negotiator.

Following his win, the Saudi crown prince sent him a congratulatory message, wishing Iran and its people success and further progress.

He also expressed a willingness to develop and deepen relations with Iran.

In March 2023, Saudi Arabia and Iran reached a groundbreaking agreement in China to restore diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies and missions.

The two countries formally declared in April of last year the resumption of diplomatic relations with immediate effect.

Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran in early 2016 in response to attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran.

The attacks followed Saudi Arabia's execution of a Shiite cleric.
