HK Observatory issues cold weather warning as temperatures dip

The Hong Kong Observatory on Sunday morning issued the Cold Weather Warning as temperatures in the city were expected to drop further on Monday.

The HKO said minimum temperatures in urban areas on Monday morning will be around 11 degrees Celsius and lower in the New Territories. At 2:20 pm Sunday, the temperature at the observatory in Tsim Sha Tsui was 14.7°C.

“People are advised to put on warm clothes and ensure adequate indoor ventilation,” the observatory said.

Temperatures in the city were expected to range between 11°C and 16°C on Monday, 12°C and 18°C on Tuesday, and 13°C to 18°C on Wednesday.

Ta Kwu Ling in the New Territories could see 7°C on Monday morning while the mercury could drop to 9°C in Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Sha Tin, and Tseung Kwan O.

Wong Chuk Hang in Hong Kong Island could see 10°C while in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon could record 11°C  

“As it is rather windy on high ground, wind chill effect will be significant. The temperature felt by body will be lower than the actual air temperature. Prolonged exposure to wintry winds may lead to hypothermia,” the observatory said.

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health also reminded the public, particularly the elderly and people with chronic illnesses, to take appropriate measures to protect their health amid the cold weather.
