BAGHDAD / DAMASCUS - A barrage of rockets struck on Thursday a military airbase housing US military experts and agencies in Iraq's western province of Anbar, an Iraqi army source said.
The attack occurred in the evening when an undetermined number of rockets landed in the Ayn al-Asad Airbase near the town of al-Baghdadi, some 190 km northwest of the capital Baghdad, causing no casualties, an officer from the Iraqi army told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The source said that after the attack, the Iraqi security forces found a rocket launcher while combing the areas surrounding the airbase, adding that the troops were able to defuse two rockets that were ready to be launched.
An armed group calling itself "the Islamic Resistance in Iraq" claimed the attack in an online statement.
The statement, the authenticity of which could not be independently verified, said the rockets hit their targets without providing further details.

Earlier on Thursday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said pro-Iran militia launched a drone attack on a US military base in southeast Syria late on Wednesday, which comes amid growing tension between Iranian-backed fighters in Syria and the US forces in eastern Syria.
Believing the US to be complicit in the Israeli military campaign against Gaza, the so-called Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an Iranian-backed militia, deployed two weaponized drones from Syria and one from Iraq to target the US base in the al-Tanf area in Syria's Homs Province.
The UK-based watchdog group said the US forces intercepted two drones while the third inflicted some damage on the base, though no casualties were reported.
The Observatory said that the Iranian-backed fighters are carrying out these attacks on US bases in eastern Syria under the banner of "Revenge for Gaza," with US bases in the area remaining on high alert in anticipation of further assaults.
